Are College radio stations still low powered FM Stations that can only reach the Campus?
The same has happened in the UK, to me if a Station is going to be a "Local" radio stations, it needs to sound local, it needs to be local.
Employ staff/DJ's that know the area, not as it is now a generic local commercial station with if you're lucky a locally based breakfast
and drive show, with the rest of the shows broadcast from a central location, usually London.

Thank goodness (especially in the days of Corona) for BBC Local Radio!!!
Me too!!! I remember hearing a BBC Radio documentary on American radio stations during their golden age
and I fell in love with radio through that.

There are still stations out there, both AM and FM, that put out good and rather independent content. The thing is, you have to be in the right locations to pick them up, kinda like a 21st century version of pirate radio. I've driven through entire states and you'll be amazed at some of the great stations I've come across just flipping through, and it's obvious they aren't part of the conglomerates. Unfortunately, you most likely have to live in rural areas and/or have a perfect signal location to get to hear them more than just while you're driving through.

Several of them have regional range, same as other radio stations on similar towers. And they can stream on the web as well, or use services like SoundCloud for individual shows, etc. The local one is a public access station one which means they run on donation funding and do PSA's instead of commercials, and have many locals who DJ their own shows in 2-3 hour blocks.

The majority of big commercial radio in the US is owned by iHeartRadio (formerly ClearChannel) and Cumulus media conglomerates.
Cost cutting measure have lead to most local morning shows being cancelled and a few national shows being syndicated on several stations of similar genres. They pretend to be the new 'local show' but they are so generic and national its easy to tell what is going on.
So in Flippys road trip scenario he could listen to the same morning show 4 days in a row in 4 different time zones. o_O

Morning, beautiful morning here, its 16c & sunny, getting up to 25c on Friday.
I can now see the reason for the upsurge of Online Radio stations/Podcasts, it's a such a loss of individuality when the men in grey suits
have made radio generic/national all to increase their profit margin, yes there's a place for National radio, but not sacrificing
    local radio for it.
    That is such a loss!!!!

My go-to radio channel is Classic FM, which seems to me to have some of the characteristics of a local station, although it probably has international coverage? But then the adverts intrude and the men in grey suits emerge!
The breadth of Classical music means that one could probably listen for a full 24 hours and never hear the same music twice, but you'd have to endure the same adverts repeated endlessly!!!!

We have more of regional channels at my end. With the internet and all more channels have surfaced. So lets say you live in Yorkshire then you would listen to Yorkshire radio. If you cross the border to Lancashire the radio will change accordingly. We also have 4 channels that are for the national radio.

Sadly unless it's a BBC Local Radio station, 80% of the output is the same over the UK as they're no longer Independent commercial radio stations but are now owned by media groups. The British Government lowered the percentage of local output required in any 24 hours schedule. So probably the only local programming of sorts will be at Breakfast & drive times.

I love Classic FM too (available Worldwide via the Global app) but even there on some shows you'll hear certain pieces of music on rotation and they'll appear again and again.

    Meanwhile
I'm working in the garden in the sun. Starlings seem to be interested, but so far keeping away.

Every time I see Emma Watson I remember the first time I saw her in the first Harry Potter movie. She certainly became a beautiful woman.

Sadly VE Public commemorations have all been cancelled.

But we'll be having our Front Garden Tea Party tomorrow and the weather is meant to be up 25c.

We were cooking last night, made a Churchill Fruit cake to a WWII recipe
and some ginger cake, hopefully, it won't poison us.

Read today in the tabloids that Delevigne and Benson are about to break up. Tabloids are always tabloids but i have always been of the firm belief that if a relationship doesnt work dont brute force it into working. Break things up and go your separate ways.
