Therefore, please do not use imagebam, or any host, that provides live playing gifs in those specific threads. If you see your gif playing once you post, try to use a smaller thumbnail and if that does not work use a different approved host.

I use a couple different programs for creating my GIFs.

The first one is ffmpeg. I use that to extract the frames of the video that I want to use.
http://ffmpeg.org/download.html - scroll down to the Windows section and follow the link.

ffmpeg is a command line program. So I copy the video file and paste it into the bin folder. In a DOS prompt, CD to the bin folder.

    Then I run a command like this: ffmpeg -i am-eotv.wmv -q:v 1 -r 29 am-eotv_%8d.jpg
ffmpeg -i [name of video file] -q:v -r [frames per second of video] [name of jpg you want]
"%8d" means that it will add 8 digits to the end of the file name and increment the name for each image
so you would get am-eotv_00000000.jpg, am-eotv_00000001.jpg, am-eotv_00000002.jpg, etc.

That command extracts frames from your entire clip.

This command extracts frames from a timed range in the clip:
    ffmpeg -ss 00:40:53 -i S02E04.mkv -t 30 -q:v 1 -r 24 S02E04-3_%8d.jpg
"-ss 00:40:53" says to start at 40 minutes and 53 seconds
"-t 30" says to stop 30 seconds later.

Then I go through the images and decide which ones I want to use.

If I am doing a forward/reverse gif, I found the easiest way to do this is to copy, not move, the images to another folder. Then using a program like Bulk Rename Utility, http://download.cnet.com/Bulk-Rename-Utility/3000-2248_4-10174242.html , I rename the copied files and make sure the numbers at the end decrease.

    So then I would have something like image001.jpg, image002.jpg, image003.jpg renamed to image999.jpg, image998.jpg, image997.jpg.

Copy the renamed version of the files back into the folder with the original names. The reason for that is so when you sort the images alphabetically, you'll have image001.jpg, image002.jpg, image003.jpg .... image997.jpg, image998.jpg, image999.jpg

Now you'll have the images going forward and then reverse.

Then I have the recently "free" version of Adobe CS2. https://www.adobe.com/cfusion/entitlement/index.cfm?e=cs2_downloads
I use ImageReady to make the actual GIF.
If, When you start the program, Adobe asks if you want to register or allow it to check for updates or something along that line. Say no every time. (I'm not sure if that is really necessary, but I do it just in case Adobe didn't like me having the free version.)

Within ImageReady, go to File, Import, Folder as Frames. Browse to your frame folder and let it import the images. Then you can select all the frames, change the duration for each frame, and Save Optimized as a GIF.

The CS2 version of ImageReady does have memory issues on my computer. Sometimes if I am using too many frames or the image size is too large, resulting in, say a GIF over 50MB, the program will hang up. I usually crop to the important part of the image to reduce the size. Or you can even use just every other frame instead of all of them.

I didn't really intend for this to be a tutorial when I started writing. Hopefully this makes sense. PM me with questions or maybe post publicly if it will help others.
