A cleanup area in the basement of an abandoned hydro station in Niagara Falls. Shot with a long exposure, light-painting (4d maglite)...and a sepia filter added post-edit.

Inside an abandoned steel mill (Bethlehem Steel, Lackawanna, NY).

We had the opportunity to shoot this location several times, both night and day. An amazing place for photos.

SK, Great images, nery nice work! I like your style...

I am a wannabe photo guy try to learn so many things. But I lean as far as I can to the use of natural light, for some reason I do not like flash. And my favorite stuff is inside old buildings like you have in some shots above.

I will watch and learn from your postings, Thanks.

A few props in our warehouse studio.

We rent a 30,000 sq. foot, 110-yr-old factory during the summer months for photo production - which comes complete with peeling paint on the walls, skylights for natural lighting, and hardwood floors.

Likewise, I love working with natural light whenever possible. But I also enjoy lightpainting with long exposures and a variety of light sources (flashlights, tea candles, LEDs, etc.).

Abandoned buildings are a great place for experimental lighting. I tend to check out a place during the day and then return at night so I have an idea of the layout of it beforehand.

    Thanks for the comments. :)

A cave system (near Akron, NY).

It is rumoured the caves were built (and then abandoned) by the U.S. gov't during the Manhatten Project era for storage of nuclear waste generated from the steel mills around upstate New York (Bethlehem and Union Carbide).

Today they are in bad shape - the ceilings are falling in and its considered very hazardous to explore them. The entrance area is partially flooded with natural seepage.

My favorite shots were taken fairly close to the entrance to make use of the natural lighting. Inside the cave was about 50F while outside was a hot summer day around 90F - which resulted in a natural layer of fog a few feet from the floor which showed up in the pics.

On the outskirts of St. Catharines is the infamous 'Blue Ghost Tunnel' - a 100-year-old train tunnel that was the scene of a big train collision that killed two railway workers.

Today, its an abandoned landmark, a relic of a bygone era. Several hundred yards long, it curves towards the old Welland Canal and is partially flooded at one end. Workers have buttrussed portions of the roof with wooden beams to keep it from collapsing.

I shot these one night last fall.

The light in the middle of the first shot is my daughter lightpainting the walls and ceiling with a maglite.
